USN VFA-22 Challenge Coin Description

USN VFA-22 Challenge Coin

Honor Tradition. Celebrate Service. Preserve Strike Fighter Legacy.

This USN VFA-22 Challenge Coin is a premium collectible inspired by the storied history of Strike Fighter Squadron TWO TWO—the “Fighting Redcocks”—one of Naval Aviation’s most distinguished strike fighter squadrons. Featuring the squadron’s iconic Fighting Redcock emblem and tribute to their combat legacy, this coin embodies the core values of Readiness, Lethality, and Naval Aviation Excellence that define the men and women of VFA-22.

Since its commissioning in July 1948, the Fighting Redcocks have been a mainstay of Naval Aviation for over 75 years. From flying the Grumman F-8F Bearcat to today’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the squadron has completed combat deployments in Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror. This coin honors their service—from the first strikes against Taliban forces in Afghanistan to combat operations against ISIS.

USN VFA-22 Challenge Coin Applications

For Squadron Recognition & Awards

Commanders use challenge coins to recognize exceptional performance among squadron members and as on-the-spot awards. Within VFA-22, these coins are presented to pilots, maintenance crews, and support personnel in recognition of special achievement, completing a demanding deployment, or demonstrating outstanding professionalism.

For Carrier Air Wing Deployments & Combat Operations

VFA-22 has a distinguished combat history dating back to Korea and Vietnam, with more recent operations including Desert Fox (1998), Afghanistan (2001), and global War on Terrorism deployments. Coins from specific deployments—such as the VFA-22 Afghanistan Service Challenge Coin—honor the squadron’s participation in named operations and campaigns.

For Commander’s Recognition & Leadership Gifts

Senior military leaders give challenge coins as gifts to foreign dignitaries, civilian VIPs, and visiting officials. VFA-22 coins serve this ceremonial role when the squadron hosts distinguished visitors or participates in joint exercises and diplomatic events.

For Collector & Naval Aviation Memorabilia Markets

Officially licensed US Navy challenge coins are collectible items for naval aviation enthusiasts, military history buffs, and veterans. VFA-22 coins are sought after due to the squadron’s 75+ year history and participation in major conflicts from Korea to Afghanistan.
