Boston Police District 15 Challenge Coin Description

Boston Police District 15 Challenge Coin

Honor Service. Celebrate Community. Preserve Charlestown Policing Legacy.

This Boston Police District 15 Challenge Coin is a premium collectible inspired by the dedicated law enforcement officers serving the historic Charlestown neighborhood — the oldest neighborhood in Boston and home to the iconic Bunker Hill Monument . Featuring iconic Boston and law enforcement symbols — the BPD badge, Charlestown landmarks, the Thin Blue Line flag, and “District 15” designation — this coin embodies the core values of Honor, Courage, and Community Partnership that define the men and women of District A-15 .

The Boston Police Department’s District 15 serves the Charlestown community — a neighborhood steeped in Revolutionary War history, from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”). Officers face diverse challenges — from community events like the “Walk the Beat” program and Easter egg hunts at the Bunker Hill Monument to serious crime investigations and community policing initiatives . This coin honors their service — from patrol officers walking neighborhood beats to specialized units responding to critical incidents.

Boston Police District 15 Challenge Coin Applications

For Unit Recognition & Commendation Ceremonies

Challenge coins are normally presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit . Within District 15, these coins are awarded to officers for exceptional service, successful investigations, and contributions to community policing initiatives such as the Charlestown “Walk the Beat” program .

For Community Engagement & Policing Programs

District 15 officers actively participate in community events including the Charlestown “Walk the Beat” program, “Coffee with a Cop” at Warren Tavern, basketball games with teens at the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club, community cookouts, and the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Bunker Hill Monument . Challenge coins are used as tokens of appreciation for community partners, youth participants, and residents who contribute to neighborhood safety.

For Citizen & Business Recognition Programs

The Boston Police Department has a community recognition program in which officers are encouraged to present commemorative coins to citizens who go “above and beyond” in service to the community. Officers explain to the Chief why they presented their coin, and the citizen receives a letter of thanks from the Chief . This program extends to businesses, such as local jewelers who assist in recovering stolen property.

For Safe Exchange Zone Program Recognition

District 15, located at 20 Vine Street in Charlestown, operates a designated Safe Exchange Zone available 24/7 for residents conducting online transactions . Challenge coins serve as recognition for community members who utilize these services and for officers who oversee the program.
