U.S. Army Challenge Coin Applications

For Recognizing Soldier Achievements & Core Values

Army coins are primarily used to recognize Soldier achievements, build camaraderie, and boost unit morale . Receiving a coin from leadership is considered a significant honor and can represent acknowledgment of exceptional service, going above and beyond in duty, or exemplifying the core values of the Army: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage .

For Training Graduations & Rites of Passage

Special edition coins commemorate specific training milestones. The “Forge” challenge coin celebrates the grueling 96-hour cumulative training exercise that week-seven Basic Combat Training trainees must complete to earn the title “Soldier” . These coins serve as graduation gifts and ongoing reminders that Soldiers are a force in readiness . The silver dollar coin presentation is also a traditional gesture of appreciation following a newly commissioned officer’s first salute during Officer Candidate School graduation ceremonies .

For Unit Morale & Esprit de Corps

Coins are used to instill unit pride, improve esprit de corps, and reward hard work and excellence . Unit commanders and senior enlisted leaders present them as impromptu recognitions of excellent performance . The coins represent anything from a small unit to the offices of top leaders, such as the defense secretary, and help reinforce a soldier’s connection to their specific unit or organization .

For Commemorative Events & Special Occasions

Coins are produced to mark unit anniversaries, significant deployments, or any special event or occasion . The 78th Training Division designed a unique CSM coin under the direction of its command sergeant major, demonstrating how leadership creates custom coins to motivate and recognize soldiers . This includes official command emblems and unofficial coins designed by groups of friends or soldiers who fought through a specific event .
