Iwo Jima Flag Raising Commemorative Coin Description

Iwo Jima Flag Raising Commemorative Coin

Honor Valor. Celebrate Sacrifice. Preserve Marine Corps Legacy.

This Iwo Jima Flag Raising Commemorative Coin is a premium collectible inspired by one of the most iconic and defining moments of World War II—the raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945, captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal . Featuring the legendary flag-raising imagery and the official Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblem of the United States Marine Corps, this coin embodies the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment that define the Marines who fought with uncommon valor on the black sands of Iwo Jima .

The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the fiercest and bloodiest campaigns of the Pacific War, claiming over 26,000 American casualties. Twenty-two U.S. Marines and five Navy corpsmen earned the Medal of Honor for their actions—representing 28% of all Medals of Honor awarded to Marines during World War II . This coin honors their service—from the beach landings to the summit of Mount Suribachi, and the enduring legacy of the Marine Corps.

Product Features

  • Intricate Design: Features the iconic flag-raising scene atop Mount Suribachi based on Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, with “MARINES” and the years 1775-2005 (for 230th anniversary editions)

  • Premium Quality: Minted from high-grade zinc alloy (or .900 fine silver for official U.S. Mint commemorative editions) with antique bronze, gold, or dual-chrome finish, substantial thickness, and high-relief 3D surfaces

  • Double-Sided Artwork: Flag-raising imagery on obverse; official USMC Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblem with “SEMPER FIDELIS” motto on reverse

  • Perfect Size: Standard challenge coin diameter (1.5 to 1.75 inches / 38-44mm) or U.S. Mint standard (1.500 inches for silver dollar)

Iwo Jima Flag Raising Commemorative Coin Applications

For USMC Unit Recognition & Command Awards

Challenge coins are presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement, outstanding performance, or going above and beyond the call of duty . The Iwo Jima coin is a significant award for Marines, often given by commanding officers to boost morale and honor service . As one Marine officer explained, “When our officers give coins to personnel, they are treated as awards… They are awarded to service members who go above and beyond the call of duty” .

For Iwo Jima Battle Commemorations & Heritage Events

Presented during annual commemorations of the Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19 – March 26, 1945), honoring the legacy of “Uncommon Valor” that became synonymous with the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi . Distributed at events hosted by Marine Corps heritage organizations, Iwo Jima survivors’ associations, and during Marine Corps Birthday celebrations . The 2005-P US Mint silver dollar was specifically authorized to commemorate the Marine Corps’ 230th anniversary and honor all Marines who have served the nation .

For Veterans, Military History Enthusiasts & Collectors

Collected by veterans, history enthusiasts, and anyone who holds the Marine Corps in high esteem . The coins serve as tangible pieces of history celebrating the bravery and sacrifice of the Marine Corps . Displayed in personal shadow boxes, military scrapbooks, and coin collections alongside other military memorabilia . The 2005-P US Mint silver dollar was the first time the United States honored a branch of its military with a commemorative coin .

For Marine Corps Heritage Foundation Fundraising

Proceeds from the original sale of the 2005-P US Mint silver dollar were paid to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation to support the construction of the National Museum of the Marine Corps . This makes the commemorative coin a direct contributor to the preservation of Marine Corps history.
