Boston Police Department Challenge Coin Description

Boston Police Department Challenge Coin

Honor Legacy. Celebrate Service. Preserve First in the Nation Heritage.

This Boston Police Department Challenge Coin is a premium collectible inspired by the proud legacy of the Boston Police Department — recognized as the first organized police force in the United States, established in 1854 . Featuring iconic BPD and Boston symbols — the classic police badge, the 1854 “First in the Nation” designation, the Paul Revere statue, the Zakim Bridge, and the American flag in vivid red, white, and blue enamel — this coin embodies the core values of Honor, Courage, and Community Partnership that define the men and women of the BPD .

Boston holds the distinction of establishing the first organized police force in the United States in 1854 . Today, the BPD serves a population of over 685,000 residents across 48 neighborhoods, from the bustling streets of Downtown Crossing to the historic avenues of Beacon Hill and the diverse communities of Dorchester, Roxbury, and South Boston . The department is organized into multiple bureaus including the Bureau of Field Services, Special Operations Division, Bureau of Investigative Services, and the School Police Unit — each with its own distinct role in protecting the Hub . This coin honors their service — from patrol officers walking neighborhood beats to specialized units responding to critical incidents.

Boston Police Department Challenge Coin Applications

For Unit & Bureau Recognition

The Boston Police Department is organized into multiple bureaus, each with its own opportunities for distinction and custom challenge coins . Different BPD bureaus utilizing challenge coins include: Bureau of Field Services (Patrol Divisions, Special Operations Division, Tactical Operations, Environmental Safety Group, School Police Unit), Bureau of Investigative Services (Civil Rights Unit, Major Case Division, Criminal Investigation Division), Bureau of Professional Development (Academy Division, Student Officers Group, Firearms Training Unit), and specialized units including Dignitary Protection Unit, Family Assistance Unit, and Peer Support Unit .

For Officer Recognition & Commendation Ceremonies

Challenge coins are used to welcome new transfers to a team, in recognition of promotions, or to single out remarkable officers for their exceptional service . A BPD officer’s challenge coin represents their badge, their medal, and their pride as guardians of Boston . They serve as tangible recognition when formal medals may not be warranted but officers deserve more than a verbal thank-you .

For District-Specific Commemorative Coins

Individual BPD districts produce their own distinctive challenge coins celebrating their unique communities. The Boston Police District 11 Challenge Coin features a bold gold dragon symbolizing strength, vigilance, and courage, honoring the officers serving Dorchester—Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood . These district-specific coins are meaningful for current and former officers assigned to those precincts.

For BPD Specialized Unit Coins

SWAT, K-9, and other specialized units have their own challenge coins. The BPD K-9 Unit challenge coin carries the presence of four-legged heroes, with wear patterns telling of countless tracks through Boston’s neighborhoods and representing the bond between handler and dog . The SWAT challenge coin carries the gravity of split-second decisions and symbolizes the precision and teamwork required in life-threatening situations .
