The U.S. Mint is authorized under the “25th Anniversary of 9/11 Commemorative Coin Act” (H.R. 1993/S. 1289) to produce limited-edition gold and silver coins for the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks . Coin specifications include up to 50,000 $5 gold coins (90% gold, 8.359 grams) and 400,000 $1 silver coins (90% silver, 26.73 grams), with legal tender status as numismatic items. Designs will be emblematic of courage, sacrifice, strength, bravery of first responders, and endurance and hope of survivors, with at least one coin bearing the inscription “Never Forget” . Surcharge proceeds from commemorative coin sales (estimated $35 per gold coin, $10 per silver coin) directly benefit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center . The funds support the museum’s ongoing operations, educational programming, preservation of the 9/11 story, and services for family members, survivors, rescue workers, and military personnel affected by the attacks . Rep. Lawler called it “ensuring future generations understand the significance of that day,” while Sen. Schumer said it would “uphold our sacred promise to never forget” .
For First Responder & Military Fundraising (2011 10th Anniversary):
The ‘9/11 10th Anniversary “NEVER FORGET” Challenge Coin’ was sold by more than 50 organizations nationwide, including USO centers, American Legion and VFW posts, military units from all five service branches, and metro police/fire departments such as NYPD and Seattle PD . The coins were priced at $10–$20 each, with a fundraising goal of over $911,000 benefiting military families and first responders . USO Puget Sound Area sold over 5,000 coins, generating more than $30,000 for USO programs supporting active-duty military, dependents, veterans, and wounded warriors . Coin specifications: die-struck brass metal with 3-D reliefs, 2″ (50mm) diameter, 1/8″ (4mm) thickness, antique brass plating, diamond-cut swirl edge, presented in a soft black velvet pouch .

911 commemorative coins are collected by individuals seeking tangible keepsakes of remembrance. The 10th Anniversary Challenge Coin features a 3-D relief of the World Trade Center twin towers, American Bald Eagle, Statue of Liberty, and Stars & Stripes on the front, with “NEVER FORGET” inscribed around the inner circle of 21 gun casings — a 21-gun salute honoring all who have fallen . The reverse features a 3-D relief of the Pentagon with “HOME OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE,” and the names of all five service branches . The 9/11 Memorial Museum holds in its collection an early commemorative challenge coin with engraved design depicting the Pentagon, a bald eagle, the American flag, a laurel branch, a sunburst, and the words “UNITED IN MEMORY | SEPTEMBER 11, 2001” .
