USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, commissioned on March 13, 1982, and named after Congressman Carl Vinson, the “Father of the Two-Ocean Navy.” The carrier has served in major operations including Desert Strike, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Southern Watch, earning multiple Battle Efficiency Awards and Navy Unit Commendations. The FY-18 CLASS 124 deployment marked another significant chapter in the carrier’s distinguished service, with the ship and its crew demonstrating the “Fight Tonight” readiness that defines the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike groups. This coin honors their sacrifice and the legacy of all who have served aboard the “Gold Eagle”—from the commissioning crew of 1982 to the generations who continue to project power and protect freedom across the world’s oceans.
