USN Georgia Chief Sergeant Association Challenge Coin Applications

For CPO Initiation, Pinning Ceremonies & “Phase” Events

The coin marks the official entry of Chief Selectees into the Chief’s Mess—the esteemed, symbolic gathering place for U.S. Navy CPOs . Presented during the formal pinning ceremony that concludes the rigorous initiation season, it becomes a permanent symbol of their acceptance into the brotherhood of Chiefs, a rank established on April 1, 1893, which holds a distinction unique to the U.S. Navy .

For “Ask The Chief” & Deckplate Leadership Traditions

The coin embodies the Chief’s role as a mentor and deckplate leader—visible leaders who set the tone, know their mission, know their people, and develop them beyond their own expectations . The inscription embodies the unwritten rule of Navy culture: whenever a sailor or junior officer faces an overwhelming challenge, they can seek wisdom and guidance from the Chief’s Mess .

For The “Coin Check” Tradition & Proof of “Chiefhood”

Carried at all times as a critical symbol of Chiefhood, the coin is central to the traditional “coin check” challenge. If challenged and unable to produce the coin, the member is obligated to buy drinks for the challenger and the group . This practice reinforces camaraderie, esprit de corps, and serves as a constant material reminder to uphold the duties and expectations of a Navy Chief .

For Chief’s Mess Gatherings, Association Events & Reunions

Exchanged among members of the Chief’s Mess during formal mess nights, Georgia CPO Association meetings, and heritage gatherings. The Chief’s Mess serves as a revered institution where CPOs foster camaraderie, address challenges, and uphold the traditions passed down for over 130 years . The coin acts as a powerful symbol of the “Goat Locker” brotherhood and lifelong bonds among Georgia Chiefs.
