For Unit Recognition & Commendation Awards
The coin is presented to EMS personnel, paramedics, EMTs, and support staff in recognition of life-saving service, exceptional performance, and dedication to duty. Lancaster County EMS has won many state and regional awards, including Large System of the Year, Paramedic of the Year, Advanced, Intermediate, EMT of the Year, and Director of the Year . A formal resolution from the South Carolina House of Representatives honored Danny Hyatt, a paramedic with LCEMS, as 2024 Paramedic of the Year . The coin can be presented alongside these prestigious awards to recognize individual excellence .
For Community Programs & Citizen Recognition
The coin can be presented to citizens who have contributed positively to public safety or assisted in emergency situations. Lancaster County Emergency Services manages various community programs including the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the Community Animal Response Team (CART), and the Yellow Dot program, aimed at ensuring public safety and preparedness . These programs provide opportunities for coin presentations as tokens of appreciation for community volunteers .
For Inter-Agency Collaboration & Mutual Aid
The coin is exchanged with partner agencies including volunteer rescue squads, fire departments, the Sheriff’s Office, and Coroner’s Office . Lancaster County EMS works closely with local fire departments and law enforcement to maintain emergency operations and hazardous materials response plans . The department coordinates with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office to improve response and mitigation efforts through joint training and education courses .
For Training & Professional Development Recognition
The coin is presented to new EMTs and paramedics upon completion of training programs. Lancaster EMS runs an “EMT Academy” program where students commit to working for Lancaster EMS for two years after graduation and certification . The training department organizes and conducts training courses, maintains records and equipment, develops new protocols and procedures, and evaluates new employees .
